Versatility, originality and activism are the hallmarks of this year’s Hootenanny Band. All four members are singer-songwriters, multi-instrumentalists and vocalists from the Elizabeth Riley Band who bring a raw, contagious energy to their music that captivates and inspires audiences:
For Jen, Patricia, Sarah and Carmel, playing in Gil’s Hootenanny is a natural extension of their identity, as equity, social activism and social justice, combined with audience participation, are central to their performance style. As Jen says: “Our songs are routed in personal, social and political realities and infused with women’s lived experiences.”
- When: 7:30pm, Monday, May 1st
- Where: Clarke Room, RA Centre, 2451 Riverside Drive, Ottawa, ON.
Inspired by the legacy of Gil Levine, Monday, May 1st, 2017 will mark the 8th year for Ottawa’s Gil’s Hootenanny, the annual community sing-along celebrating the stories, struggles and victories of working people. We are incredibly happy to be part of the Westfest MainStage show this year! Westfest is an amazing FREE community festival in the Westboro area of Ottawa. The musical lineup is superlative, including some of our personal favourites, Sarah Harmer, Lynn Miles, Rae Spoon, Craig Cardiff, The Acorn, Terry Gillespie… and there are all kinds of great activities and community stages, bring the whole family!

So – thanks for singing along with us on May Day! We had a hoot at Gil’s hootenanny! But if you didn’t get enough of us… never fear, as long as you can get yourself down to Pressed Cafe (corner of Arthur and Gladstone in Ottawa!) this Saturday (May 9) and also May 23rd!
May 9th we are thrilled to participate in a benefit for Arts Health Network Ottawa! Many other wonderful artists will perform that night too. Hint: Doors open at 7, music starts at 8, and we are kicking off the evening of music, our set will go from approx 8:00 to 8:30. There will be a silent auction and of course a HIGHLY interesting and eclectic crowd!!!
And May 23rd at Pressed will be a real treat… a TRIPLE treat, in fact. The amazing Heather Lynn Song invited us and the legendary Erin Saiorse Adair to share the bill that night! That’s right, a whole night of female musicians sharing original songs! (…and some fun covers of course….) NOT TO BE MISSED!!!! The Triple Treat poster is below – share, tweet, google plus it, tell all your peeps 🙂
Spring is around the corner and we have some upcoming Ottawa performances in the works, including MainStage at Westfest on June 14! We are super excited!!! See below for a full list of our gigs.
